Know your seasons. In Central America, for example, the dry peak season runs from mid-December through Apnl. From mid-December until early February in particular, you have good weather and lush vegetation. Of course hotels will be full, making researching prices and booking ahead essential. Visiting off-season, on the other hand, may let you avoid crowds and high prices with only a few tradeoffs. In rainy season, for instance, beaches might be wet in the afternoon but sunny and dry in the morning. That said, transportation could be a problem due to delayed flights and washed-out roads. And some climats might be unbearably cold or hot-turning your vacation into an episode of Survivor.
Travel in the shoulder season. If your destination's peak season is from December through April and you're planning to travel at the end of April, you might save hundreds of dollars if you change your travel dates by a week or two. Note, though, that properties may charge the peak-season rate for an entire stay even if you straddle the change between peak and off-peak seasons, so be sure to ask when the rates go down. Also, check out Offseason.CheapTickets.com, a quarterly report by Cheap Tickets. com based on an analysis of pricing information from its Web site.
Watch out for shifting shoulder seasons. The definitions of peak- and off-season used to be a lot clearer, before airconditioning and before local tourism boards got the bright idea of expanding their markets. Room-rate charts will give you a good idea of peak booking periods.
Consider travel patterns. Tourists crowd Europe's major art cities at Easter, when locals head to beaches and the countryside. From March through May, bus loads of schoolchildren take places of historical interest the world over by storm. And you don't want to be, say, on an Italian beach in August if you can help it. You won't have a scrap of sand on which to lay your towel, and there won't be any deals on resorts. (Italian beach vacations are best taken in June and September.) On the other hand, from mid-July through August Paris is abandoned (albeit hot and stuffy), as the locals flee the city on beach trips of their own.
